How to Save Gas While in School

Learn how to stretch your gas
Gas prices are one the rise. Every day, many people complain about the price of gas. It seems that the routine of life is work, food, school, and gas. If you’re feeling discouraged, don't be, because there is hope! There are key elements in order to help you save money at the gas pump and more money in your pocket. The following list will help guide you into the right direction toward savings.
  • Drive at a consistent speed. Make sure to drive at the speed limit. Many people think the speed limits are not reasonable, but going at those speeds helps save gas. Avoid quick acceleration and hard braking. Cruise control will help keep you at a constant speed, even when going up and down hills.
  • Use A/C only on the highway. Open the windows when driving at lower speeds. At fast speeds, like when driving on the highway, use the A/C. Using the A/C reduces wind drag flow which can burn your gas. Many people believe that A/C burns gas faster than turning the windows down. However, it has been proven to be a myth.
  • Park in the shade. Gasoline actually evaporates right out of your tank. It evaporates faster when you park directly in the sun during winter or summer. Parking in the shade keeps it cooler inside of you vehicle. By parking in the shade, you will need less A/C to cool off. If there is no shade available, park so that your gas tank is facing away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep a good tire pressure. Keeping tires at the correct air pressure can go a long way toward saving more money on buying gas. By the tires being filled to the right pressure levels, it is easier for the car to roll and adds less stress on the engine.
  • Walk to places near you. Above all, if your money is low and you have a full tank of gas, try walking and leaving your vehicle. Only drive to places you need to go and can't reach by foot.
Stopping and starting the engine frequently will cause extra wear. Don't stop the engine if you are going to be idle for less than a minute. Be very careful when shifting into neutral when going down hills. You may find yourself going a lot faster than you thought you would. By following these steps, life should be easier for you and your pockets.
